Payment integration complexity increases when scaling across markets, from managing multiple gateways and currencies to maintaining PCI compliance and supporting regional payment methods. Our approach focuses on abstraction layers that separate payment logic from business logic, using provider-managed BNPL solutions to minimize risk exposure, centralizing currency and tax handling at the backend, and leveraging transaction data to identify friction points and optimize approval rates. Use a single, adaptive payment sheet that auto-groups methods by user context (saved cards/UPI first, then other local options) rather than listing every provider. Detect country/device to pre-select likely methods, hide irrelevant ones, and keep a consistent 2–3 step flow (method → details → review) regardless of option chosen.

Direct Stripe/PayPal integration is simpler and ideal if you only need 1–3 gateways; you own the logic but also the routing and failover. Payment orchestration (Spreedly, Primer, homegrown) adds a layer that standardizes tokens and webhooks, lets you A/B gateways and apply smart routing, and is better once you scale markets and methods.

Add BNPL via PCI-compliant providers (Affirm, Klarna, Razorpay BNPL) and treat them as just another method in your payment sheet, shown only to eligible carts/regions. Let the provider handle underwriting and collections, keep clear disclosures in UI, and monitor BNPL performance (approval, default, chargeback rates) before expanding coverage.

Implement one‑click by storing network or gateway tokens (not raw PANs) returned from Stripe/PayPal/local PSPs and mapping them to user profiles. On next purchase, pre-select a saved token and let users confirm with minimal input (biometrics/PIN), keeping your app out of full PCI scope because card data never touches your servers.

Architect global payments with a single abstraction in your backend that exposes “PayIntent(currency, amount, method)” while underlying connectors map to Stripe, Razorpay, PayPal, etc. Centralize currency handling and pricing rules there, and let frontends request available methods per country/locale from a config service instead of hardcoding options.

Let gateways calculate or at least expose tax and FX where possible, and use specialized tax engines (Avalara, TaxJar, local GST/VAT APIs) wired into your order service for final amounts. Store tax jurisdiction, currency used, and gateway metadata with each order for auditability and reconcile against your ERP using standardized transaction objects.

Stream payment events (initiated, 3DS step, success/fail, decline code, method) into analytics and a data warehouse, then build dashboards for drop‑off by step, method, and bank. Use this data to tweak default methods, retry flows, copy, and routing rules (e.g., route specific BINs/banks to gateways with higher approval) to raise success rates and reduce friction over time.
