Treat this as adding three layers: payments, retail ops, and AI intelligence. First, refactor your architecture so there is a clear “POS” module: cart, discounts, receipts, refunds, cash drawer integration, and offline mode, backed by a robust order and inventory API.​ Then integrate certified payment SDKs (card, wallet, BNPL), device peripherals (card readers, printers), and POS-grade user roles with secure local storage and sync for low-connectivity stores. Finally, add AI services for real-time fraud scoring, receipt enrichment, and customer recommendations at checkout using a simple event stream from your app to an AI backend.
Use the device camera as the primary sensor and abstract it behind a “scanner” service in your codebase. For barcodes/QR, on Android use ML Kit or a commercial SDK; on iOS use AVFoundation or a third-party library, tuning which symbologies you support and setting min focus/zoom. For image recognition (products, assets, damage detection), call a vision model (on-device or cloud) with a compressed frame, not raw video, and design your UI for live feedback: bounding boxes, hints, vibration on success. Implement debounce, background threading, and aggressive result caching so scanning stays smooth even on low-end devices.
Start from the data: decide which metrics you’ll use (heart rate, steps, GPS, sleep, HRV) and integrate the relevant SDKs like Apple HealthKit, Google Fit, Garmin, Fitbit, etc. Normalize all incoming streams into a single internal schema so your AI models don’t care which device produced them. On-device, implement activity detection and basic analytics; off-device, run personalization models that generate workout plans, intensity targets, and recovery advice. Use background tasks and complications (watch) for real-time coaching—vibration, short prompts, and adaptive goals—while respecting battery and platform limits.
Implement a routing layer that consumes orders, driver capacity, and constraints, then delegates optimization to an AI/ML service. That service should use historical routes plus live traffic and weather to propose stop sequences and adjust them dynamically as events change. For ETA prediction, train models on past trips (origin/destination, time, route, driver, vehicle, conditions) and expose a simple ETA API your app calls whenever a route updates. In the driver app, surface AI outputs as guidance (re-routing, stop reprioritization, risk alerts) with minimal taps and strong offline fallbacks.
Architect the PWA with an app-shell: ship HTML/CSS/JS for the frame once, then hydrate data via APIs so subsequent views feel instant. Use a service worker to cache static assets aggressively, pre-cache critical routes, and implement network-first vs cache-first strategies based on content type. For AI calls, push heavy inference to the backend and keep responses small and cacheable; stream results where possible to avoid blocking UI. Measure LCP, TTI, and CLS with RUM tools and continuously optimize bundle size (code-splitting, tree-shaking) so AI features don’t bloat initial load.
Follow “privacy by design”: collect only what the feature truly needs, anonymize where possible, and define strict retention policies in code, not just in policy docs. Use on-device models for sensitive use cases (keyboard suggestions, biometrics, local recommendations) so raw data never leaves the device. When you must call cloud AI, minimize payloads, strip identifiers, and encrypt in transit and at rest. Provide granular toggles for AI features, transparent UX explaining what data is used, and clear paths to delete or export user data, wiring these directly into your backend and model stores.
